This is a map of the 1860 election. There were 4 parties, the Northern Democrats (Douglas), the Southern Democrats (Breckenridge), the Constitutional Union (Bell) and the Republicans (Lincoln). The Southern Democrats became the Confederates, and after Reconstruction the Dixiecrats, the Constitutional Union party disintegrated, and the Northern Democrats became the Democrats of today.

But the Dixiecrats were part of the Democratic Party.
