It’s rather sad that a religious flag is flown at all. The US Flag should be all that is needed. IMHO, it should represent, to the world, ALL PEOPLES.

OK, this is an obvious misunderstanding.

It is a pennant. The navy uses pennants as signals. They’re codes from a time predating radio, telling other ships status, intentions, and in some cases commands. In this case it’s a code for “the chaplain on board this ship is conducting services”. Chaplains are supposed to give non-denominational services, and not every ship in a group (flotilla, squadron, etc) may have a chaplain. This signal notifies of the opportunity - assuming conditions allow - for crewpersons from other ships to attend the service.

The only legacy of a time when the church had more say in the state - from before it was US - is the fact it’s flown above the national standard during the actual service. Should it be change? Yeah, probably. Will it? Probably not - it’s relatively low on almost all the priorities around.
