Just plain bias. We all can easily fall into the trap of believing things that reinforce our existing beliefs.

True. You or I, kinda no big deal. But news media professionals? They need to make an effort to set that aside. That did not happen, but hey the state of US news media is pretty sad to see. We are now missing a big chunk of check and balance.
