re: #116 EPR-radar

IMO the root issue is that in a secular society there is no reason to give any religion preferential treatment. So what is the point of being a “Christian intellectual”? If their ideas are good, they don’t need the support of religious authority. If their ideas are bad, religious authority cannot save them.

Agree.

But I think Jacobs is a good example of someone who isn’t willing to take the obvious intellectual step - that classical orthodox, Nicene, Christianity is not enough anymore, if in any sense of the world “Christianity” has a place in society.

On Mohler’s podcast Jacobs made an explicit attempt to state that when he references “Christian” he means so in the traditional, narrowly but strongly delimited, sense (as I wrote above.) This was, I suppose, to affirm to Mullah Mohler that he (Jacobs) would properly meet the definition of what is a “Christian” in Mohler’s eyes.

And so when Jacobs laments the lack of Christian intellectuals, he’s trying to be clear that he still means traditionally defined Christians.

We see again today at the VVS that the religious right is cheering on the very clearly (by both word and deed) anti-Christian Drumpfskind.

There is nothing Jacobs has to offer to these folk, and it’s not because he’s shunned by liberal secular intellectuals. Rather, it’s because the throw-backs don’t care. They’re not buying what any intellectual has to say, Christian or not.
