One of the jobs of the President is to be the consoler in chief. Reagan had to do so after the Marine Barracks bombing, the Challenger disaster, and other times. Every president has to do so. Some are more effective than others. Reagan, Clinton, and Obama were particularly effective at this.

Trump simply is incapable of doing so because that requires empathy, which he does not have.

We see that with his letter from Yad Vashem, and in his statement on the Manchester bombing, and we’ll see it again and again. He simply doesn’t get it.
