I would think building a canal through the Rocky Mountains would be a bit difficult.

Technically, the Rocky’s end north of the border. The border area is something of a massive valley in the American Cordillera. Where the Rocky;s has ended and the Sierra Madre Ranges (Occidental & Oriental) begin.

So, it would significantly easier than cutting a canal through the Rocky’s proper
