Both countries embraced Social Darwinism; any that grabbed hold any harder than they did had the Darwinist beaten out of them by the Soviets during WWII.

And both were homes to the “Protestant Work Ethic”, which has seamlessly turned into the “Prosperity Gospel” in both. “I don’t care how ill or disabled you are, you’re poor because God is punishing you for your previous poor choices, and if you’d just learn to bloom where He planted you instead of trying to replant yourself where you don’t belong, you’d be at least middle class! You shouldn’t be eating anything that takes less than an hour and a half to cook either—that’s why you’re fat and it contributes to why you’re too sick to work an honest 65-hour week!”
