Trekkie here. That’s not really what the show suggested.

For decades now, in the official Star Trek timeline, earth basically started going to shit in the early to mid 21st century. This culminated with a Third World War that killed 600 million and damn near wiped some countries completely off the map.

As mankind was struggling to rebuild in the years after the war, a guy named Zefram Cochrane created the warp engine, allowing humans to travel faster than light. This caused the Vulcans to arrive on earth to say “hello”. Upon realizing we are not alone in the universe, humanity finally gets its act together and the peaceful futuristic earth seen in many of the Star Trek shows is born.

Basically, they used Jan 6 to fit into the narrative of things going to hell ahead of the Third World War. They did NOT imply it was a direct cause of the conflict.

Oh, and Strange New Worlds is awesome. Seriously. The best Trek show I’ve watched in a while.
