Union Pacific took over Southern Pacific’s operations around the same time they absorbed C&NW. UP had trouble digesting both of them simultaneously, which lead to fatal wrecks caused by crew fatigue and entire trains being abandoned on sidings in the middle of the desert because there were no crews available.
