I usually go by their name. is it semi-Hispanic like Filipino, is it really short 3 letters or less like Korean, does it have a lot of O’s or As like Japanese, etc. My name is a color so what the fuck do I know. You could just ask what kind of name thy have is. It’s not really rude question if asked without some sort of implied malice.

Surnames don’t always tell the whole story but I agree that it’s not rude if you’re not showing malice or implying it. My surname is German and my German ancestors arrived between 1840-1882 in the Castle Garden era. But I’m more ancestrally Slavic with people who arrived in the Ellis Island era.
