I recall the hype over Hillbilly Elegy, but one aspect of it seemed accurate: the Appalachian whites who showed up in the 60’s were an ethnic group unto their own, white but not quite like the Central/Eastern European-immigrant whites or the WASP whites in our neighborhood
I grew in an Ohio River rust-belt town in the 1950s. I never heard the N word, but Pollack, Spic, Dago, and a lot more nasty things were heard. Now, many of those Dago, Spic, and Pollack kids in those categories I grew up with are Trumpers in their seventies.
