Lee and Supervisor Malia Cohen last week introduced legislation to make the possession of hollow-point, or expanding, bullets illegal and to require dealers to notify police when more than 500 rounds are sold in a single transaction.

California hunting regulations require hollowpoint or softpoint expanding bullets for the taking of big game. I realize that not a lot of deer hunting gets done in SF, but if this proposal passes hunters who live in SF won’t even allowed to keep their California State mandated hunting ammunition within the city and county.

Banning hollowpoints also carries the risk of increasing injuries to unintended third parties, since full metal jacketed bullets are more likely to both ricochet and to over penetrate their target.
