Well, if I’m being honest, I’m recognizing the issue because of what Rebecca Waston of skepchick.org has gone through the last few years, and what PZ Meyers has been writing about it. Prior to that, in all reality, I was pretty fucking oblivious to it.

Goes for most of us. I’m a white male, grew up in a Christian family in Colorado and Kansas. Even though my high school was heavily integrated and I had non-white friends, it took me spending time in a non-white nation and experiencing the mistrust just because of race and national origin to get a clue. And sitting as “invisible tech” at a sexual abuse round table… went home and asked my mother and my sister if they’d ever been raped or sexually assaulted, got “yes” and a refusal to discuss further.

I’m still blind and stupid a lot more than I should be, yet I’m appalled at the ignorance I see among the privileged.
