Couple thoughts:

There are probably a couple dozen federal medical care/payment systems that could be consolidated.

None of it has to happen simultaneously—the ultimate program can be “grown” from existing programs as resources permit.

The system needn’t be pure—there can still be a role for cadillac care for those who insist on paying.

Insurance doesn’t disappear completely. Wife and I are on Medicare, but still maintain a good bit of our employment-based insurance to cover gaps.

I get that, I’m just wondering why we would need something like workers compensation for on the job injuries if we’ve got a single payer system? And likewise, is there a need for non-health insurance policies to provide coverage for medical costs if, again, we’ve got a single payer system that, at least in theory, is going to cover those costs? (I can imagine a system where some form of those thing exist to cover damage due to missed work/income and/or pain and suffering, but speaking from experience, the vast majority of damages in personal injury cases is almost always medical costs)
