One reason to get the FBI involved in collecting data would be for prosecuting a hate crime. Perhaps - and this is only a guess on my part - the feds want to make sure the locals won’t screw up (or even intentionally weaken) data collection in the case.

Or maybe it isn’t aimed at Zimmerman, but at others?
