In truth, unlimited population growth is probably the greatest threat humanity faces, and not in the far distant future either.

People like Schafly make it almost impossible to discuss the issue in any rational, and ethical, manner.

Actually it turns out that the best way to control population growth is simply to educate women, make sure they have equal rights and access to health care including family planning services including contraceptives. You don’t need a ‘population control program’ and in fact talking about these measures as ‘population control’ measures is counterproductive. Japan doesn’t have any population control program and yet the birth rate is below replacement level. The same is true with many other developed countries.

In summary we need to have a discussion about how to bring economic development and modern attitudes about women to underdeveloped countries, not a discussion about how to control their populations. That problem will go away by itself if the underlying causes are addressed.
