For those who remember the 1996 campaign, were the latter days of Dole’s run anything like this? I’m curious if the Republicans did a better job of managing expectations or there was just a whole lot more vote splitting going on back then.

I used to say that this reminded me of Kerry’s run back in ‘04, but even got a modest bounce out of the DNC. Romney got virtually nothing, and Obama’s started to pull away. Unless he can find some way to fake charisma in time for the debates, the fix is in.
