This is a rarity. A cop convicted for killing an unarmed black man. And yet, this case raises serious questions about the sentencing, the charge on the conviction, and how the system remains stacked against minorities and mentally ill from justice done on their behalf.
The cop was convicted not on 2d degree murder, but a lesser charge of manslaughter. Rather than the 10 years prosecutors sought, the jury recommended 2.5 years.
