Semmes had an Oh Shit moment when he found out the war had been over for months and he was sort of a pirate. Made a negotiated surrender in England.
Radio was a great invention and it wasn’t very far in the future at the time of the final Confederate surrender (about 35 years). The Spanish-American War of 1898 was the last naval conflict in which radio played no part, while it had a major role in the Russo-Japanese War just 6 years later.
Btw, this November 2 is the 100th anniversary of the first commercial radio broadcast, on KDKA in Pittsburgh.
