My grandmother was excommunicated by the Catholic Church for divorcing and remarrying. This was back in the 1920’s when divorce was not recognized by the Catholic church and they saw her as a serial adulteress for remarrying.

Divorce is still not recognized…you have to go through what was then the hooraw of getting an annulment. After Vatican II, it was easier to get an annulment, but I still remember how PISSED OFF a coworker was about his father getting an annulment from his mother, and basically saying that their six children were the product of a defective marriage. The whole thing is bullshit.
