How, exactly, are they defining respect?

Well, if you doft your hat after Israel decimates them, that would be respect, but if you leave your hat on after you bury the dead, it shows contempt for them and their cause.
So assuming you worked up a sweat, and paused to wipe your brow, that would be construed as respect because you removed your hat, if only to wipe away sweat.
