Your point is well taken, but it should be noted that the article goes on to state that the instructor in question shot that student while violating NRA rules against bringing ammo into a class like the one he was holding. So the accident happened not because of the NRA’s rules and principals but in spite of them.

Unless instructors follow them the rules don’t matter. If I can find news reports of more than a dozen accidents at NRA classes over the past year then it’s not a one-off problem.

And I’ll go further - it’s not just classes. One of the pages recently posted to this site was of a line of men waiting to get into the NRA conference room. Most were carrying long weapons in cases. Two of the four had the butts of the rifles or shotguns on the ground and had their hands resting across the muzzles.

I think there’s a major problem with the NRA giving lip service to firearms safety, but failing to actually practice it beyond “check the block”.
