E gad, Kafka. I only read one of his stories, The Metamorphosis. I made the mistake of reading it all in one sitting first thing in the morning—it totally ruined my whole day. I’ve never read anything so depressing before or since, and never read any of his other works for fear of running into something similar. It was just wayyyyy too dark for me.

You’ll also want to skip The Penal Colony. We read it in high school (along with The Metamorposis) Being the practical person I am, The Metamorphosis sort of stalled me at the concept that if he is a person sized cockroach, then his legs would be proportionately to small to hold him up. The Penal Colony on the other hand was so ghastly I told the teacher I wasn’t reading any more Kafka. Whether it was a class assignment or not.
