Apparently it was originally a predominately Irish neighborhood but became more Eastern European by the turn of the 19th century.

Yep. As a matter of fact, when I was a kid, I volunteered with the Cleveland Natural History Museum on on a dig in the Flats. We were digging for artifacts in an old Irish settlement. Ironstone Bend on the Cuyahoga River.
