If California goes, then New York and the New England states would want to follow suit. Then Oregon and Washington state. And then the First Nations would demand their land back.

War against California would escalate the dissolution of the republic.

If California goes, Oregon and Washington may ty to join in that effort, I could also see Clark and Washoe counties in Nevada wanting to join. Texas would surely want out and a few neighboring states may decide to join them.

As happened in 1860, as soon as one state tries to leave there will be a domino effect of other regions looking at the possibility of splitting and what the perceived benefits would be.

I, for one, am still a believer in this grand experiment and will remain hopeful that we can and will survive the worst of it
