TOMATS: I saw the movie, can’t remember if I read the book. I think so. Some teachers try to make you hate the good stuff, thinking that’ll leave more for them.
It was a stinker of a movie, Spencer Tracy or not. I think it would be impossible to make a good feature-length movie of a man going fishing, catching a nice fish, then losing it. Moby Dick, after all, wasn’t a fish story.
I read somewhere that Hemingway hated all the movies of his books, and finally gave up watching the ones that were made. I don’t blame him. None of them was much good, even For Whom the Bell Tolls.
