This sounds like the debate at Wonkette they had a couple years ago over a recipe where Rebecca noted it called for canned clams.
Someone who lives on the coasts went into a meltdown on a thread about how godawful canned clams are and why don’t you use fresh ones &c. (Something something Montana really doesn’t have fresh clams.)
Same goes here for tuna. I suppose if I could land a big albacore tuna or something on a fishing line in the North Platte River then I’d go for fresh tuna. As it turns out, there aren’t any tuna in the river.
