I’m definitely not an epidemiologist, but I would think that after the host species starts getting a deadly virus under control, the virus will either have to evolve to not kill hosts or it will completely disappear.

Kind of like humans are going to have to start doing so that the earth will sustain them.

This disease is not so lethal that it couldn’t continue to circulate among humans indefinitely. Also, the disease has other hosts and does not rely solely on us for its survival.
