re: #102 Teukka

I had to put solar film (blocks 99% UV, 45% Visible, 10% IR) on all my windows this year. Why? Because without it, the temperature in my flat easily goes up to 35C/95F from the sunlight. When I moved here 20 years ago, I only had occational days, maybe weeks when the temps would spike that bad.

Last year? Things had escalated to the extent that I had to put the oscillating fan on and leave at least 3 windows open in the flat in mid-May. I didn’t shut the fan off or close the windows (bar torrential downpours) until September. I hope that the film will work.

Now, I live in downtown Stockholm, 5919’46”N 1804’07”E. I have a 6-lane road right outside the window (live on the 4th floor thankfully). The noise and the dust issue is minor compared with the heat problem. And I’m not the only one with the issue, not in the building, not in the city or even the Stockholm county area.

And still the right wingers are harping on HURR! DURR! gloBULL warning is a liBULLar conspiracy to stifle free enterprise, the scientists are all on the take. etc. etc. etc. And US rightwingers are exporting that mindless incoherent BULLSHIT to rightwingers here (yes, I’m beginning to hear the same arguments from conservo’s this side of the pond, not only on climate issues but other issues as well).

And I haven’t even mentioned winters yet. They’re major league fucked up (pardon my French) as well. Something is amiss —BIG TIME— with the climate and it needs our motherfucking attention motherfucking NOW (again, pardon my French).

These retrobulbarly evacuated individuals are playing not only with the lives of their electorate, but the lives of many on this planet we call home. The only home we got.

If we fuck this place up (pardon the French again), we might well not get a second chance. As in GAME OVER. I’ve seen preliminary worst-case scenarios that raise that possibility. Not involving nuclear exchange, but simply the cumulative effects of famine, disease, conventional war and climate mayhem.

*Phew* glad to get that load off my tounge.

*sits in corner and awaits reaction*

Fuck ‘em. We need strict conservation measures now. But how we’ll get them in the US, or when, if ever, is debatable. It’s going to take outages, floods, worse weather more than likely. Even then, there will be those who have the attitude that if they have the money, they’ll do as they please.

I usually keep the plantation blinds closed so no direct sun enters the apt, and the exterior LR wall with the front door is solid, with a window only on the kitchen (a Pullman type), and another on the opposite end. There’s also a sliding glass door on that end, too, but it gets morning sun and not the hot, direct sun of the afternoon which the solid wall blocks. Around noon, the sun has gone over the apt, so it’s bright in the am, darker in the pm but I leave an 11 watt bulb on in the LR to brighten it up more since I don’t leave the front door open to the sun.
