AED though, what makes Scotland so adverse to the Tories and it appears conservatism in general? Not really familiar with Scottish history in the years since they became part of Great Britain and then the UK. I do have tiny ties to Scotland, second great grandmother was born there but her family was all Irish and she left when she was pretty young.

Not AED, but I’ll hazard a guess here:

1. “Tories” having (slowly but surely) become identified with “English” - on a regional-cultural-politics level, therefore toxic.
2. “Tories” having become identified with Thatcherist economic policies (basically “IGMFY” on a nation-wide level) which grates on Scottish communal sensibilities - i.e., “We’re all in this together and ought to look after one another” seen my many/most Scots as a simple declaration of basic principles: and dismissed by UK Conservatives as dangerous radical nonsense.
3. Pure economic self-interest: a (vigorous) reaction against Tory polices regarding natural resources (i.e. North Sea oil) which boils down to: “Scotland is part of the UK: therefore you [Scots] have no right to any more oil revenue that the majority [non-Scots] wish to give you”
4. Ancient historic attitudes about English/Scottish relations (i.e. “English” are real, civilized people, Scots are violent drunken kilted barbarians who need to be “put in their place”“)
