About two decades ago, I read “When Prophecy Fails”, one of the seminal works of modern social psychology. For those unfamiliar, it was a study of a small Chicago-based UFO religion which believed in an imminent apocalypse and when that prophesized apocalypse didn’t happen, it then took a look into the group’s coping mechanisms and how they dealt with their failed prediction.

I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see something similar with Trump’s supporters, except on a much larger and national scale? That right there would make a fascinating study in sociocultural mass psychology.
