Lovecraft’s hard to read - he winds around his point for a sense of atmosphere, and to drag out his word count. :)
That’s what happens when you’re paid per word, LOL.
His earliest stuff is OK - passable pulp. He didn’t really hit his stride until the mid-1920’s. The French novelist Michel Houellebecq described the story as the first of Lovecraft’s “great texts” and I’d tend to agree.
