Trump was always just a symptom of the rot. A healthy party couldn’t be taken over by this dimwitted demagogue, but a deeply-sick party driven by extremist religion and hate of the other was easily exploited. The next demagogue won’t be as stupid as Trump is.

The GOP could not field a serious or competent candidate in 2016. Trump stepped up on a protest platform, and only a handful dared take him on because they were all all eager to pick up his supporters once he flamed out or dropped outa as everyone was expecting him to do.
