Oh, god, Le Guin. ANYTHING by her is pure gold. If “Always Coming Home” is on there, grab and run. Earthsea is exquisite. Ditto “Left Hand of Darkness”, “The Word for World Is Forest” (If you want to know where Avatar was stolen from), “Roccanon’s World”, “The Lathe of Heaven”… and so much more. My memory dump is in quality order I think.
I did the Word for World is Forest, which IIRC is a short story or novella. I’ll try one of hers, I think.
There is a very long one called The Snow Queen by Joan Vinge. I love what I’ve read of Vernor’s.
Is C.S. Friedman any good? “Downbelow Station” sounds very familiar, but I can’t remember why.
