If they don’t engage in some soul-searching (or at the very least pull their heads out of their asses), they’re going to end up as a more-or-less permanent opposition party with its stronghold in the Deep South and rural parts of the Western US.

That is the inherent conflict within the GOP: they are incapable of abandoning their ideologies. It means that their cravings to stay in power will lead them to even more extreme and illegal acts.
