Then the party will have a choice to make about what is important to it. I would really hate to see the GOP suffer the fate of Canada’s Conservatives in the early 1990’s, who suffered a major schism and were out of power for 15 years before they could finally come together again.

And that really will be the thing to watch next summer and fall, namely will the establishment succeed into mollifying the base or will the base refuse to vote/go third party.
