… if our society ought to introduce a kind of adult training program, say a 12 month program, for anyone who has been out of school for more than 2 decades. Sort of like an expected mid-life return to community college. The idea would be to be trained in something totally new, exposed to concepts and tools that are emerging.

It’s a good idea. My father (turning 91 in a few months) has been pretty good about continuing to learn after retirement. He’s enjoyed the Apple program that charges $99 for a year of weekly hour-long sessions with a young person to teach him how to use the computer.
