we must not, however, take any of the advances made in past decades in women’s, minority and LGBT rights for granted. lots of people want to see them overturned.

I think one of the things the Republican party realizes is that there’s finally enough people to implement both the social and economic programs the Democrats have been advocating (in the 1960s, when Democrats had the economic program in place - the New Deal - and passed the CRA and VRA, they lost the racist vote which hurt their chance to sustain it). All Democrats lacked were getting people out to the polls. Trump has finally woke people up. Now, they’re trying a scorched earth campaign because they’re close to losing it all.
