It’s allegedly based on some “ancient African proverb,” which means that (a) the proverb was made up by some white dude 20 years ago and (b) it completely contradicts the horrid reality on the ground in Africa — the last place from which we should be adopting “proverbs.”

As to (a), that’s a bold statement to make without any evidence. And regarding (b), I’ll take my proverbs where I find them. Denigrating an entire continent of people and their wisdom (I reserve judgment on this “proverb” until I actually find someone who can tell me what it says) because of the misery in which many of them live seems a little bit, well, racist to these old eyes. Is everything Confucius ever said garbage because the Chicoms hold power in his homeland?

This kind of thing is easy to mock but where does it get us?
