You’ll also want to skip The Penal Colony. We read it in high school (along with The Metamorposis) Being the practical person I am, The Metamorphosis sort of stalled me at the concept that if he is a person sized cockroach, then his legs would be proportionately to small to hold him up. The Penal Colony on the other hand was so ghastly I told the teacher I wasn’t reading any more Kafka. Whether it was a class assignment or not.

I’ve never read anything about Kafka’s life. I can’t imagine why someone would want to write such depressing things, though I suppose the ability to do so is a sort of talent/genius. Still… ugh.
