I have often wondered if they have trouble with this because their dominant religion is based on a fanatically relentless literalism. I’ve noticed this irony challenged mentality among southern fundies all my life. They don’t seem to understand anything beyond crude sarcasm and, conversely, they are offended by any form of metaphor or irony, innocuous or otherwise.
