I’m so old I remember when it was a real pleasure to fly commercially; spotless, beautifully decorated cabins, nice seats, pleasant attendants, good grub, free goodies, no hassle getting into the plane. There were routes that were only dreamed of today: Non-stop Lubbock to LA, for example. There was even a jet flight from Lubbock to Amarillo, took 21 minutes and cost $19.95. It was a favorite for folks who had never flown before.

This was all because routing and rates were regulated by the Civil Aeronautics Board. Operators had to take low profit routes in order to bid for the high profit ones. If you wanted Dallas to Denver, for example, you had to take Lubbock to Denver or Abilene to Tulsa with it. The real breaking point was the abolition of the Civil Aeronautics Board as part of Reagan’s accursed push for de-regulation. It then became a wild free-for-all not seen since the early days of railroading.
