When I was stationed in Spain, I travelled to Barcelona occasionally. While I didnā€™t involve myself in Spanish politics (not my business or place), I overheard others talking about things.

Every time I was in Catalonia I would hear the occasional grumbling about independence or poorer parts of Spain were sucking on wealthy Cataloniaā€™s tax money (hear the same kind of talk in the USA), but no serious effort to break away other than a few wingnut parties.

That was back in 92-94. I have not been back since, so I donā€™t know if grumbling turned into a real grass roots movement or an Astroturf movement.

From what I understand, itā€™s been rumbling since Francoā€™s death, and probably even during his regime. Itā€™s hard to say, but again, I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Russia would seek to take advantage of a long-standing grievance to further their overall strategic goals (in this case, fuelling separatist/independence movements throughout the EU member states).
