Once again, I have to ask about the self-reporting of label-identification.
Who is left that declares themselves “Republican”?
I suspect the “Independent” category includes more and more former-Republicans.
The polling data CNN uses is on page 15 here:
[Embedded content]Although the pollster claims there were 1012 respondents, I cannot find a more detailed breakdown.
So while 58% of Republicans claimed to approve of the policy, we don’t know how that translates into the American population as a whole, as we don’t know how the selection bias of the polling worked.
“Independent” also grew as a class as the Iraq debacle under GW Bush developed.
My term for “independent” is temporarily embarrassed Republican.
