Wikipedia entry doesn’t exactly say he was deliberately targeted for being him, it might be more correct to say that the second autopsy concluded that he was shot from much closer than originally determined. The CID investigation basically says he was fired on in a case of mistaken identity, which is unfortunately kind of understandable. Afghanistan is dark at night. All of the ambient light you take for granted doesn’t really exist in most places around there.

The immediate burning of the body and forcing people to lie is less understandable.

But yes, the implication of the evidence is that the Army either knew Tillman had been “fragged” or feared the public reaching that conclusion once the evidence was revealed. The destruction/disappearance of evidence, altering official reports and citations, forcing soldiers to repeat lies to maintain the fiction, and the lies told to the family when they pretty much already knew the truth. If his death wasn’t a deliberate act, the Army certainly did everything in their power to make it look like it was.
