According to a number of recent studies, while human hunting and habitat loss certainly contributed to the demise of the passenger pigeon, the idea that the most populous bird in North America crashing from billions to zero in fifty years likely had combined causes.

As such, genetic researchers dove in, and discovered that the pigeon was surprisingly non-diverse for a species with so many members. When a new predator (Europeans) were introduced into their environment, they could not adapt.
