I admit I have never studied the NT in depth, where is the part where Jesus was in a sword fight?

The sword in Matthew 10:34 is not a literal sword, it is interpreted as the Word of God. Jesus did talk about swords and taking up arms literally: “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52).
