re: #130 wheat-dogg
Reading this review of how the American press covered Mussolini and Hitler as they rose to power makes me uneasy.
Sound familiar?
The thing that many who are downplaying Trump’s chances as a lawmaker are forgetting is that our system is easy to subvert in time of crisis. Lincoln put the kibosh on Habeus Corpus during the duration of the Civil War and even jailed reporters for saying things critical of the war effort. During both World Wars, the government clamped down on civil liberties in the name of “national security.” And we’re all pretty familiar with the various assaults on our civil liberties during the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Trump simply has to follow on the model of the GOP after 9/11, attacking the patriotism of any Democrats who oppose their efforts to seize power immediately after a terrorist attack or national tragedy and stoking popular opinion against any who suggest that their seizure of power is anything but a legitimate effort to “save” America.
