Insect larvae are the reason the treating spices with radiation is really the best remediation. Low doses kill the larvae and render insects infertile. But, we’re a country of morons who are terrified of the word “radiation,” so the only spices that are irradiated are those that go into processed foods.

Take a look at many spice bottles and you notice the nice little rejoinder “Not Treated with Radiation” which is just advertising because the law stipulates that all irradiated food must bear a label stating that it has “been treated with radiation” or “irradiated.”

Makes me wonder if China irradiates spices. They already sell the ultra-pasteurized milk that needs no refrigeration. I would not be surprised if the pepper was too.
