I’ve driven that road many times, U.S. Highway 550 through the San Juan Mountains, one of the most beautiful drives in the world. There’s a short section where if you’re driving southbound, there’s a several hundred foot drop off with no guardrails. Why no guardrails, you ask? It’s in a major slide path, they learned decades ago that if you put guard rails in they’ll get taken out in an avalanche sooner rather than later.
